ABSTRACT

What is a wage and how is a wage justified? This paper analyzes the moral concepts that justify wages based on the above two questions and attempts a productive development on the fairness of wage setting through the normative elements and justification logic of each concept. In the meantime, wages have been regarded only as a strategic management element of a company, causing many social conflicts. I think that the examination of the moral justification of wages is the starting point to solve this problem. In other words, wages should be approached from a moral point of view, not just from an efficiency point of view, and this should begin by revealing what moral elements are in the concept of wages. Therefore, this paper seeks to find the normative elements of wage justification in the concept of wage itself. First, I clarify the three concepts of wage justification, and show that each concept results in normative logic. These three concepts are ‘reward’ for valuable work performance, ‘incentive’ to motivate employees and encourage hard work, and ‘price’ to be paid for the purchase of information and labor needed for production. I then argue each normative logic is justified, but can be easily refuted. Lastly, I argue that wages should be basically determined by the normative logic of the concept of price because the concept of price has social efficiency, productivity, and compatibility with the market economy that the concept of reward and incentive do not have. Nevertheless, the wage imbalance that occurs will have to be corrected and supplemented through comparison with other concepts.
