ABSTRACT

This paper delves into the distinction between the notions of inference and implicature in pragmatics. The debate surrounding the usefulness of implicature has been ongoing since its introduction. This paper aims to review the rationales supporting the distinction between inference and implicature and investigate the cognitive abilities that are recruited in making inferences and deducing implicatures. This study specifically focuses on the role of common sense knowledge and theory of mind in inferences and implicatures, and how these general cognitive bases can account for specific cognitive abilities involved in these processes. This paper also examines the development of common sense knowledge and theory of mind in infants, exploring whether they are innate or learned and how they relate to the acquisition of inferences and implicatures in cognitive and linguistic development. Overall, this paper contributes to a better understanding of the distinction between inference and implicature and how they are related to cognitive abilities and development.
