ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to examine the validity of Deleuze's criticism of Hegel in 『Difference and Repetition』, that is, the criticism that Hegel’s subjective logic has regressed the radical concept of difference reached in the Doctrine of Essence. This criticism implies that Hegel relativizes absolute differences by incorporating a teleological and organic perspective into logic in conceptual logic. This article was designed as a preliminary study for follow-up research on the implied criticism. Deleuze criticizes Hegel's absolute difference as being negative, mediated, symmetrical, and circular based on identity, and argues that the difference itself is experienced uniquely through positive, direct(non-mediated), asymmetric repetitive movements. This article explains that Deleuze's criticism of Hegel's absolute difference is based on a mistaken understanding of the Doctrine of Essence. This paper argues that Deleuze's criticism is not valid, and that the absolute difference, which relates to itself, is not a vertical difference. Just as identity is a form of reflection in the Doctrine of Essence, this paper aims to reveal that absolute differences, like identity and ground rules, are reflection regulations and have limited validity.
