ABSTRACT

This study explores the basic foundation of Kim Dae-jung’s political thought by focusing on the ‘formation’ of the thought. This exploration is conducted through an approach to the main issues in the aspects of politics, power, conflict, and statesman, taking Kim Dae-jung’s discourse and political actions as the subject of analysis. Through this process, it can be confirmed that the foundation of Kim Dae-jung’s political thought is generally based on the inclination of ‘political realism.’ The balanced pursuit of ‘scholarly awareness of the problem’ and ‘mercantile sense of reality’ that he valued can also be seen as a political orientation formed on the foundation of such political thought. In addition, it can be found that the thoughts of Niebuhr, Toynbee, Weber, Mencius, Sima Qian, and Russell influenced the formation of the foundation of Kim Dae-jung’s political thought. This study provides an opportunity to expand the modern Korean political thoughts and to contemplate the political amateurism prevalent in Korean politics reflectively. It also raises the need for ‘prepared’ statesmen equipped with statecraft.
