ABSTRACT

This paper explores how Jeong Je-du,by integrating the thoughts of Zhu Xi and Wang Yangming, developed his unique interpretation of “liangzhi” (innate knowledge), showcasing the self-correcting nature of Confucian thought. Jeong Je-du thoroughly studied and understood the core theories of both Zhu Xi and Wang Yangming, identifying the potential issues in their practical application through critical analysis. Zhu Xi's “gewu zhizhi” (investigating things and extending knowledge) often led to an excessive focus on external matters, neglecting internal cultivation, while Wang Yangming's “liangzhi” could,in some cases, oversimplify moral practice, resulting in indulgence of desires. By synthesizing and amending the ideas of Zhu Xi and Wang Yangming,Jeong Je-du reveals the inherent flexibility and adaptability of the Confucian system, further demonstrating that Confucianism can maintain its theoretical vitality and enduring influence amid the changing social and intellectual landscapes.
