ABSTRACT

I will compare Goodman’s irrealism which has been seen as a part of main current Anglo-American philosophy with Latour’s constructionism, which has been seen either not as a part of main current Anglo-American philosophy or a part of main current continental philosophy. Goodman contends irrealism by the concepts of symbolic construction, versions, and worldmaking and so on. Latour shows construction of facts by the concept of literary inscription. Goodman focuses on words, numerals, pictures, sounds, or other symbols. Latour stresses the importance of numbers and curves resulted from literary inscriptions. Goodman pays attention to ‘idealistic’ construction in terms of symbolic construction, while Latour to ‘material’ foundations of literary inscriptions like experimental instruments.
