ABSTRACT

By utilizing ‘Asian Barometer Survey’, this study examines the perceptions and attitudes of ordinary people on democracy during the Thaksin government in Thailand. This study also analyzes the determinants on popular support for democracy in the early and late Thaksin government. The results in this study are summarized as follows. First, Thailand’s democracy retreated in the latter part of Thaksin’s rule. Looking at the indicators of Freedom House, Thailand was classified as a ‘free’ country in 2001, but it was classified as ‘partly free’ and ‘not-free’ in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Second, despite the retreat of democracy in Thailand in the latter part of Thaksin’s rule, many Thai people preferred democracy as a political system and judged democracy as a form of government. Third, the evaluation of the national economic situation the evaluation of the domestic economy, the satisfaction with the administration of the state, and the evaluation of democracy are falling in the latter period of the Thaksin government. Nevertheless, the economic and political performance of the Thaksin government can not be regarded as being negatively evaluated by the citizens when compared with other countries. Finally, it was expected that evaluation of economic and political performance will affect democratic support. In the analysis, however, only the political performance was the determining factor of citizens’ support for democracy in Thailand.
