ABSTRACT

This article introduces some places of sweetness in Tainan and Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and analyses their historical contexts and social meanings. Tainan and Kaohsiung played an important role in Taiwan's sugar industry since the early 20th century. Therefore, there has been various sweet foods and places related to sweetness: Fruit shops, shaved ice shops, dried fruits shops and sugar factories that are now out of operation. These places have long historical contexts of their own. Though old sugar factories are currently being used for other purposes, they emphasize their relevance to sugar. These places related to sweetness are tourist attractions and the process of consumption of sweet products by tourists is shaping the characteristic of sweetness as a stereotype image of these cities. Tourism in the global capitalist system is closely related to consumption. Some of the locals have a slightly different viewpoint and attitude from tourists, but they can not completely deny their gaze and attitude. Regarding the history of sugar factories built at the time of Japanese rule, only the contents of “good past” are emphasized selectively, resulting in romanticization of industrial heritage. Sweetness experiences in Tainan and Kaohsiung, and their attitudes on the places of sweetness are a matter of taste as well as of history and require various interpretations.
