ABSTRACT

This study reviews research trends in Taiwan’s Neolithic archaeology and analyzes the methodological transformation and academic significance that emerged in the process. Beginning with early 20th-century surveys by Japanese archaeologists, the field developed through postwar excavations and typological studies by Taiwanese and Chinese scholars. Since the 1980s, scientific methods such as radiocarbon dating, pollen, and genetic analyses have shifted research from cultural comparison toward ecological and population-based interpretation. The study contributes by establishing a diachronic framework for East Asian maritime archaeology, integrating interdisciplinary data to clarify indigenous origins and interaction networks, and highlighting the role of scientific innovation in transforming archaeological inquiry.
