ABSTRACT

The purposes of this paper is to investigate the graphicacy abilities and problems of elementary and secondary school pupuls and to suggest how to improve their graphicacy abilities in terms of teaching and learning activities, curriculum and production of map and its relevant materials. In order to assess the graphicacy of the school pupils, current textbooks are analyzed to figure out the types of maps and their components, and then ten graphicacy test items are selected from the results of the textbooks. This paper also uses a SOLO(Structure of the Observed Learning Outcome) model to measure the degree of the graphicacy to which a hierarchical and complex thinking processes are tested. In conclusion, this paper suggests that in order to enhance the graphicacy of pupils, teachers should prepare adequate teaching materials in right of their academic school year. The teachers should also select and rearrange maps in consideration of their levels. Finally, to narrow the gap of learner graphicacy that stems from being exposed to maps of different contents, one theme should be selected, and then appropriate maps of different types be prepared.
