ABSTRACT

This paper introduces an exploratory approach to identify determinants of natural latex yield and to investigate their spatial variation using geographically weighted regression (GWR), hoping that the research outcomes could support the regional conservation and agricultural production activities in tandem. Natural latex is an important material because it is used to produce medical supplies and tires; therefore, its global demand has increased rapidly. Expansion of rubber plantations alters the indigenous landscape of Asian tropics, and such change deteriorates the regional ecosystems. First, the global model was fitted to the data, which included georeferenced points collected from fields and other spatial layers, through stepwise selection. Next, the same variables were used in the local models. According to the global model, Annual mean temperature, Annual precipitation, Age of rubber trees, Elevation, and Aspect turned out statistically significant at the 99% level; however, the signs and statistical significances of parameter estimates from the local models were substantially different from those from the global model. It is expected that the GWR outcomes would support conservation policies and land-use strategies for Xishuangbanna as well as other parts of Southeast Asia.
