AB - At the United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names (UNCSGN) held in New York in August 1992, South Korea and North Korea raised the justification of the name of the East Sea while raising the injustice of the name of the Sea of Japan, which is commonly used in the international community. However, in the international community, the Japanese government has denied names other than the Sea of Japan because it is the only name established in the 19th century in the West. In the meantime, debates and disputes over the East Sea and the Sea of Japan have continued. Therefore, this study investigated and analyzed the perceptions of Korean and Japanese university students on the names of the East Sea and the Sea of Japan as part of the problem-solving process. As a result, Korean university students were found to have negative images and emotions about the Sea of Japan. Also, as a standard geographical name for the international community, Korean university students prefer the East Sea, and Japanese university students prefer the East Sea/Sea of Japan. In addition, as a solution to the problem, both Korean and Japanese students responded the most to the discussion between the Korean and Japanese governments.
