ABSTRACT

To judge whether Qian bi(錢匕) among the expressions related to the dose in the prescriptions contained in Shang Han Lun(傷寒論) and Jin Kui Yao Lue(金匱要略) means the amount or the weight, the contents about decoction and powder was put in order and the common criteria determining the dose was induced to obtain the following results. 1) Among the 4 measuring units of powder, Fangcunbi(方寸匕), Size of Jujube(大棗大) and Yalk of Egg(鷄子黃大) mean volume. 2) Ingestion by Fangcunbi is for the non-toxic case and by Qian hi is for the toxic case. Zhizhusan(蜘蛛散) among Fangcunbi for the toxic case must be taken 1/8 of the ordinary volume. And the metal among Qianbi for the serious toxic case must be taken 1/2 of the volume of the plants. 3) In Decoction or Pills by Qianbi the dose for the severe toxic case is one Qianbi and ordinary dose is 4 or 5 Qianbi. 4) The measuring unit for Liquid and Small Pills is Sheng(升) representing the volume. The measuring unit of powder or size of Madou(麻豆大) is less than Small Pills. 5) The least measuring unit of constituent herbs in decoction is one Liang(兩) and 1/2 of Liang is only used for the increase or decrase except in Mahuangshengmatang(麻黃升麻湯). Therefore Qianbi cannot be acknowledged as 1/10 of Liang. According to the results mentioned above, the measuring unit of Fangcunbi, Size of Date and Yalk of Egg is volumetric. Since the dose for the toxic case is small. The herbs of small pills is measured by the volume, Qianbi is the wrong letter of the Qianshang(錢上) as the measuring unit of volume and has the theory that Qianbi is the amount of lifted with one side of five Zhu qian(五銖錢).
