ABSTRACT

The purpose of this dissertation is to explain possibilities and effectiveness of music therapy based on five elements which is stored in life and the music is classified by Wood Qi(木 氣), Fire Qi(火氣), Earth Qi(土氣), Metal Qi(金氣) and Water Qi(水氣) in Oriental Medicine. The traditional theory about music therapy was limited to psychological or emotional instabilities and it was developed into patients psychological behaviorism therapy. However, I would like to break this stereotypical theory about music therapy, reflects on Jeong(精), Qi(氣), and Shin(神), and examine new concept of its relation to five elements in Oriental Medicine. The intention of developing this experimental study is basically from research needs on music therapy. In other words, music therapy is not only recognized as one of methods in treating patients psychological disorder superficially, but it also gives great reflection and solution on mental as well as physical disorder. Since the concepts of Jeong(精), Qi(氣), and Shin(神) which are all related to one another from Yin Yang five elements(陰陽五行) theory are very fundamental in Oriental Medicine, I consider researching and developing new method of music therapies from in Oriental Medicine is important. Since, Yin Yang five elements(陰陽五行) theory is applied in whole area of Oriental Medicine in terms of tissue organization, biological function, pathology changes or even diagnose or transcribing patients illness, theorizing and studying Oriental Medical music therapy is a reasonable approach to Yin Yang five elements(陰陽五行) theory. This experimental study is done on effectives of five elements on silk worms growth and progression and the experiment classifies and examines into several categories; growth and old depends on Yin Yang five elements(陰陽五行) theory, different types of Qi(氣)s shown in western and traditional music and the characteristics of five elements of Qi(氣). In order to measure the effectiveness during silk worms incubation in terms of five elements, firstly the experiment intends to see categorical differences from bearing, period of hatching, hatch rate of silk worms and dismissing silk worms. Secondly, in order to see larvaes progression and effectiveness, the music which is divided into five different elements is played to incubate silk worms and measured their period of progression, maximum weight of silkworms awake and asleep in 5 times, DNJ content, weight of cocoons, the ratio of changing from larva to pupa. From the experiment that I have conducted through Oriental Medicine music therapy by applied clinical experiment, following results are produced. 1. Wood Qi(木氣) is strongly shown in silkworms eggs, the eggs which are treated with five elements music therapy compared to the group with no music. It also shortens the period of larvaes progression from hatch and the eggs hatched earlier than other silkworms. 2. The ratio of changing from larva to pupa, in terms of silkworms health, the group with music therapy applied shows stronger results than the group is no music treatment. Especially Wood Qi(木氣) music make more superior results than others. 3. With music therapy, weight of pupa, cocoons weight, and the weight of silk from silkworm all display better result than other group. Especially, the group treated with Water Qi(水氣) reflects better outcome and also the quality of silk from Water Qi(水氣) treated shows good. 4. Measurement of DNJ content in group with no music has 3.88 mg/g, but group with Water Qi(水氣) shows higher content like 4.14 mg/g. Thus, it tells that Water Qi(水氣) treatment could be one of good treating methods on illness. 5. The measurement in ratio of changing from larva to pupa, Wood Qi(木氣) treated group shows the highest measurement than other groups and Water Qi(水氣) treated group shows the lowest ratio of changing from larva to pupa. From this, the Water Qi(水氣) music has a great portion of reflecting and
