ABSTRACT

Information resources on Korea’s independence movement constitute important historical records documenting the Korean people’s resistance to Japanese colonial rule and valuable sources of knowledge that should be preserved and passed on to future generations. Currently, these resources are managed by numerous institutions in Korea and abroad and made available through institution-specific databases and websites. To identify directions for the effective utilization and systematic management of these historically, informationally, and evidentially valuable resources, this study analyzes major information systems related to the independence movement, focusing on the subject areas, types, descriptive elements, and relationships of the resources. The findings reveal several significant limitations in the current systems, including reduced accessibility resulting from the dispersal of information resources across related institutions, the lack of hierarchical structures and interconnected relationships among resources, insufficient standardization of metadata, and technical limitations in interpreting Chinese characters and handwritten manuscripts. Based on the results, this study proposes conducting comprehensive quantitative and qualitative preliminary surveys, establishing hierarchical structures for the resources, developing a standardized metadata schema based on the findings, and constructing a user-centered specialized platform with an intuitive UI/UX.
