AB - This study examines the effect of Generative AI(GAI) on middle school students’ Computational Thinking(CT) by addressing constraints in the empathize stage of Design Thinking(DT)-based education.
In an 8-session program with 117 students, an experimental group used GAI to create and interview virtual personas, while a control group performed role-playing with peers. Only the GAI group demonstrated statistically significant gains across total CT scores and all sub-factors. These findings indicate that GAI serves as an effective learning scaffold, helping students overcome practical and psychological barriers to achieve a deeper exploration of user needs. This research holds significance for its experimental validation of GAI as a tool to overcome the limitations of conventional DT education.
