ABSTRACT

Amid rapid changes in the media environment and paradigm shifts in digital communication, the demand for new modes of conveying emotions in an intuitive and positive way has grown significantly. This study responds to this trend by analyzing the formative and symbolic characteristics of character-based emoticons and developing forms applicable to various digital platforms and major messenger environments. In particular, it aims to visually represent core emotional states such as “joy,” “sadness,” “anger,” and “pleasure” in order to directly reflect users’ emotional responses. The academic contribution of this study lies in presenting a theoretical framework for emoticon design as a medium of emotional expression and suggesting possibilities for expanding digital communication research. On a practical level, the development of emoticons that incorporate brand identity is expected to strengthen emotional empathy and bonding among users, promote smoother interaction and communication, and ultimately enhance positive user experiences and brand affinity.
