AB - This paper analyzes the user authentication scheme for healthcare systems proposed by Jha et al. in 2024. The analysis reveals that Jha et al.’s authentication scheme is vulnerable to session key computation attacks caused by smart card loss, and it lacks user anonymity, perfect forward secrecy, and contains design flaws. To address these issues, this paper proposes a secure authentication scheme that supports anonymity. The security analysis demonstrates that the proposed scheme is resistant to various attacks, including smart-card lost attack, perfect forward secrecy, insider attack, user anonymity, offline password guessing attack, and sensor node capture attack. In addition, a comparative analysis of the computational and communication costs with related authentication schemes shows that the proposed scheme achieves superior performance in both aspects. Therefore, the proposed authentication scheme is suitable for secure and efficient user authentication in healthcare systems.
