AB - This study aimed to analyze the hand dimensions and morphological indices of obese middle-aged women and to classify hand shapes in order to provide fundamental data for the design of hand-related products.
The study subjects were obese middle-aged women based on three-dimensional anthropometric data from the 8th Size Korea survey. Analyses were conducted on hand-related measurements and morphological indices.
The results showed that the hand morphology of obese middle-aged women was characterized predominantly by thickness- and volume-oriented features. Age-related differences were observed not in the overall hand structure but rather in localized changes at the finger level. Factor analysis identified five underlying components of hand morphology: hand size and thickness, hand structure and proportion, finger length, hand volume and three-dimensionality, and finger length ratios. Based on these factors, hand shapes were classified into four types: size–thickness emphasized type, finger length emphasized type, proportion–length ratio emphasized type, and three-dimensional proportion emphasized type. These findings indicate that the hand morphology of obese middle-aged women is not defined by a single size dimension but by a complex structure integrating thickness, length, proportion, volume, and three-dimensionality. Furthermore, the results suggest the need for a multidimensional, morphology-based customized design approach rather than a simple length-based sizing system in the development of gloves and wearable products.
