A Playground Child Entry–Exit Detection System Using a Fixed Smart Device and BLE Beacons

ABSTRACT

For semi-open playground environments, it is important to manage the safety of young children without relying on complex infrastructure, while still reliably detecting whether a child has entered or exited the playground. This paper proposes a lightweight playground child entry–exit detection system that uses a fixed smart device installed in the playground and commercially available BLE beacons carried by children, focusing on binary inside, outside state detection rather than precise coordinate estimation. The proposed system applies an exponentially weighted moving average filter to BLE RSSI to mitigate signal fluctuations, and employs a time-accumulated state transition model with four states based on filtered RSSI, entry and exit thresholds, and time delay parameters. Field experiments in three playgrounds repeatedly entering and exiting showed that the proposed method achieved average detection delays of about 5.7 seconds for entry and 7.6 seconds for exit. Compared with a simple RSSI threshold-based baseline, it reduced false positives while maintaining Precision, Recall, and F1-scores above 0.95 for both entry and exit events. These results indicate that child entry–exit monitoring can be realized in small-scale playgrounds using only low-cost BLE beacons and a single smart device.
