ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the effects the empowerment enhancement program had on self-esteem and friendship in multicultural children. The subjects of the study were multicultural children living in K metropolitan city and pre- and post-test were conducted on them. The results were presented as follows: In respect to the empowerment enhancement program, of the sub-factors of self-esteem in the subjects, general, social and family-oriented factors showed significant difference while self-esteem in school did not. Of sub-factors in the friendship, the program had significant effects on presence of and loyalty to friends, persistence of friendship, adjustment to friends and community life with friends. The results above indicated that the program afore-mentioned had statistically significant effects on self-esteem and friendship in the subjects. In particular, to enhance self-esteem and friendship in the subjects, when college student visited them to encourage them to enhance their advantages and potential power, their self-esteem were greatly enhanced. The subjects also had positive changes in friendship when the college students paid attention to enhancement of their friendship and helped them to build good relationship with friends. In particular, they were able to have new friends through group activities including skating, watching musical and movies as real help. In the future, it is suggested that to enhance self-esteem and friendship in multicultural children, the federal and local government should support the program politically and encourage community colleges and college students to actively participate in the program.
