ABSTRACT

In this study, we aim to investigate the utilization of generative AI and the perceived efficiency at each pipeline stage in small-scale game development. Little is known about where small-scale developers actually use generative AI and what benefits and limitations they experience. A survey was conducted with 93 game-major student developers who had participated in a game jam or project-based development. Utilization was concentrated in the programming and planning stages, where perceived time efficiency and output quality were also the highest, whereas 3D art showed the highest post-processing burden and the lowest quality satisfaction; perceived time-saving benefits and a high post-processing burden coexisted in this stage. Stage differences were significant, while no significant difference in perceived efficiency was found between the game jam and graduation-project groups. Usage fees and post-processing burden were the main obstacles, and prompt writing and post-processing skills were the most needed support. Through this, we suggest implications for small development teams and game development education.
