ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the effects of positive psychological capital, social support, and workplace learning on reality shock among new dental hygienists. Methods: A total of 180 new dental hygienists were enrolled in this study and completed self-report questionnaires with questions on participant characteristics, positive psychological capital, social support, workplace learning and reality shock. Data were analyzed using the t-test, ANOVA, stepwise multiple regression, and Pearson’s correlation coefficients using PASW Statistics 26.0. Results: The mean scores for positive psychological capital, social support, workplace learning, and reality shock were 3.45, 3.70, 3.21, and 3.07, respectively. All three factors were observed to affect reality shock among new dental hygienists (positive psychological capital: β=-0.298, p<0.001; social support: β=-0.379, p<0.001; workplace learning: β=-0.150, p<0.05). Their total contribution to explaining reality shockwas was 45.1%. Conclusions: These results suggest that positive psychological capital, social support, and workplace learning should be considered when developing interventions to alleviate the reality shock experienced by new dental hygienists.
