ABSTRACT

Objectives: To classify nationwide adolescent smoking patterns into three categories—conventional cigarette use, e-cigarette use, and dual use—and to examine the associations between smoking patterns and systemic and oral health characteristics. Methods: Frequency analysis, cross-tabulation, and a multinomial logistic regression analyses for complex samples were performed using data from the 18th (2022) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Logistic regression analysis revealed that alcohol consumption and depression were the strongest correlates across all smoking patterns. Poor self-rated health, underweight status, stress, and exposure to secondhand smoke were also associated with specific smoking patterns. Regarding oral health behaviors, not brushing teeth before bedtime and not visiting a dentist were associated with an increased likelihood of smoking. Conclusions: As dual tobacco use among adolescents is increasing due to the diversification of tobacco products, continuous research and a comprehensive, integrated approach to smoking prevention that considers the environmental context of adolescents is required.
