AB - 본고에서는 한국어와 일본어의 무형악센트 방언화자를 대상으로 focus와 인토네이션과의 관계를 실험적 방법으로 검토했다.
그 결과 한・일 양언어의 무형 악센트방언에 있어 focus가 인토네이션상에 반영되어 인토네이션을 규정짓는 한 요인으로 작용하고 있는 가운데 특히,focus가 인토네이션에 반영될 때 양언어에는 다음과 같은 공통적 운율현상이 밝혀졌다. 즉,발화문중의 어느 한부분에 focus가 놓이게 되면 focus가 놓이는 어구 혹은 그 직전 어구의 최종음절에 국소적인 피치상승이 관찰되었다. 뿐만 아니라 focus가 놓여지는 어구 직전에 포즈(pause)가 놓이는 경향이 두드러지게 나타 났다.
이처럼 한국어와 일본어에 나타나는 국소적 피치현상과 포즈는 결과적으로 focus의 명시화(明示化)로 여겨지는데 특히, 본고에서 대상으로 한 한국어와 일본어는 양자모두 소위 무형 악센트방언으로서 이러한 공통적 운율적 현상이 무형 악센트 화자의 발화에서 나타나는 특징적 운율현상으로 여겨진다. 단, 이러한 현상은 한국과 일본의 각각 1지점의 방언을 검토한 것으로 악센트를 가지지 않는 언어의 보편적 운율현상인지 아닌지는 앞으로 양국어의 다른 지역 무형악센트 방언은 물론 다른 언어의 무형악센트 화자를 검토하여 일반화의 여부를 논할 필요가 있음을 지적해 둔다.
나아가, 본고에서는 주로 피치자료를 참고로 발화 음조(音調)를 검토하였으나 운율현상에 대한 정량적(定量的)검토가 필요할 것으로 여겨진다.
