AB - 본고에서는 場所나 方向을 지시하는「這辺・那辺」이라고 하는 중국속어가 일본에서 어떻게 전개되어 가는가를 고찰했다. 중국에서는 唐 이후 한시나 불교관계의 서적은 물론 소설이나 희곡 등의 속문학에서 사용되고 있고 현재에 이르고 있다. 이 語가 일본에도 파급되어 『正法眼蔵』와 같은 불교관계의 서적에서 시작하여 근세에 중국속문학의 유입과 함께 많이 사용되었다.
근세에는 중국속문학을 번역한 훈독문, 통속문, 일본인작의 백화문, 「繁昌記」와 같은 한문류에도 사용되었다. 더욱이 難語・難字를 모은 당화사전에도 「這辺・那辺」이 표제어로서 등장하여 중국속어임을 확인했다.
근세의 경우, 「這辺・那辺」에 음독한 예도 있고 다양한 훈독이 존재했다. 근대에 들어와서는 「這辺・那辺」사이에 확연한 차가 보인다. 「這辺」에는 음독이 보이지 않고, 훈독의 예도 그다지 많지 않다. 한편 「那辺」의 경우는 음독을 비롯하여 다양한 훈이 존재한다. 근대문학작품에서는 「那辺」이 한어로서 사용되기도 했다. 그것은 「那辺」이 일본에 일찍 들어왔고 또한 「那」자체의 意味範囲가 넓은 것도 사용례가 많은 이유로 판단된다.
이와 같이 근세, 근대에는 중국속어인 「這辺・那辺」이 場所나 方向을 지시하는 어로서 사용되었다. 場所나 方向을 나타내는 한자표기는 보통은 「此・其・彼・何」계통의 한자표기를 하지만, 중국속어계통의 한자표기까지 한다고 하는 것은 그만큼 중국속문학에서 사용되고 있는 속어의 영향이 컸고, 나아가 문자생활을 풍부하게 한 원동력이 되었다는 것을 의미하고 있는 것이다.
