ABSTRACT

This study examines the features of complaint behaviour between close friends in Korea and Japan from the perspective of unpleasantness, discontents, way to express displeasing behaviour, the strategy and consciousness of complaint behaviour. The results are as follows: (1) Generally, Japan ranks higher than Korean in muttering the unpleasantness and discontents, but, depending on the situation, there are instances that Korea ranks higher than Japan. (2) When examining the way to express displeasing behaviors, both countries usually express discontents by way of verbal language. However, both countries do not sometimes express the discontents under the unpleasant situation. (3) When examining the strategy and consciousness of complaint behaviors, a huge difference between Japan and Korea is apparent. This study result will contribute to the mutual understanding between Korea and Japan, Japanese language education to Koreans, smooth communications, and the deepening of the cultural exchange between both countries.
