ABSTRACT

Dative Subject Construction has been the target of research because case marking and its function do not match. The target ofthis paper is the sentence of “[NP1]niwa, + [NP2]ga + Emotive adjective”. Semantically, it is an Emotive Adjective Sentence. In thissentence, the first NP is an experiencer and second NP is a stimulus or cause. First, this Dative Subject Construction was compared with Double Subject Construction. Syntactically, Dative Subject Constructionhas word order freer than Double Subject Construction. Semantically, a Dative case limits the range of an adjective only to NP1. Dative Subject Construction is markedness compared with Double Subject Construction. Secondly, It was compared with the Passive Sentence. It is similar with the Affectivity passive from a point without a direct actor. An Affectivity passive is a passive of an intransitive verb. The Affectivity passive is passive of an intransitive verb. In this respect,Dative Subject Construction can be said to be the Emotion Passive Sentence. Thirdly, the pair of the Voice of Dative Subject Construction was considered. Voice is a concept showing a participant's stance. Dative Subject Construction becomes a pair of the voice of a Emotion transitive verb sentence. Dative Subject Construction sets adescription viewpoint to an experiencer's emotion. A transitive verb sentence expresses an experiencer's state. Structurally, DativeSubject Construction is similar with adjectival passive in English. However, the completely same thing as adjectival passive sentence of English is Emotion transitive verb sentence in Japanese. Dative Subject Construction puts a viewpoint on the emotion of aexperiencer. A Emotion transitive verb sentence puts a viewpoint on the state of a experiencer. Grammar is a frame showing a speaker's attitude. The speaker can differentiate between their viewpoint and situation, or Thespeaker can state their viewpoint differently from the situation. The difference in this viewpoint becomes a grammar phenomenon. Dative Subject Construction is the grammar expressing the emotion which an experiencer does not wish.
