ABSTRACT

This study is a practical report of introducing group presentations in the Understanding of Japanese Language class in a South Korean university. Unlike a lecture class where the teacher unilaterally lectures on a subject, in this class the students themselves form groups, determine what areas they will study through group discussions, collect and study pertinent information, and prepare and make a presentation. The students themselves also provide advice and evaluations concerning each other’s presentations. Pre- and post-surveys regarding “self leadership” were conducted of students of the Understanding Japanese Language class before and after the self-directed learning. This study reports these results. Comparison of the mean values of pre- and post-surveys of all students showed that there was a positive change in the mean value of “self leadership.” According to these results and the composition of the students, it became evident that there was a good effect as a result of introducing group presentations in Japanese language class.
