ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine what requirements of nonnative Japanese teachers (NNT) are needed to be an ideal teacher in a team teaching context. This research was conducted in a team teaching class which involved a nonnative Japanese teacher. 294 Korean college students who had taken a Japanese class were asked to complete questionnaires regarding the requirements of NNT. They were also divided into five groups according to their Japanese learning experience. Data were analyzed by factor analysis and independent one-way ANOVA. The findings revealed that three factors were extracted: consideration of zero beginners, effective teaching skills, and expertise as a Japanese teacher. The independent one-way ANOVA results showed that there were no significant differences in consideration of importance for each factor between five groups even though differences in the mean were found. In other words, regardless of the students' Japanese learning experience, five groups perceived that three factors were needed for NNT.
