AB - In this study, the communication strategy of ‘nanka’ as a discourse marker in situations where Japanese native speakers and learners of Japanese contact each other, was investigated. This study shows that both Japanese native speakers and learners of Japanese used ‘nanka’ mostly as a discourse marker, and that learners of Japanese used ‘nanka’ much more frequently than Japanese native speakers.
Regarding the specific use of ‘nanka’, both Japanese native speakers and learners of Japanese showed similar tendencies in general.
However, there were some differences in the detailed use of ‘nanka’. In particular, for learners of Japanese, it was used preferentially in the mid-utterance, and the use ratio of ‘nanka’ was high when it was used as ‘Other functions(surplus)’. However, it should be noted that as a whole, ‘nanka’ functions as a linguistic strategy to maintain smooth communication between interlocutors.
