ABSTRACT

This paper analyzed the meaning and usage of the "Onomatopoeia + saseru" form in modern Japanese. As a result, it offers the following prototypes of patterns: Type I (Motion) [ [ x ACT ON-y ]CAUSE[ y MOVE z ] ], Type I (State-①) [[xACT ON-y]CAUSE[BECOME[yBE ATz]]], Type I (State-②) [ x CAUSE [ BECOME [ y BE AT z ] ] ], Type II (Motion) [ x ACT ON-y ] CAUSE [ y MOVE z ] ], Type II (State-①) [ x CAUSE [ BECOME [ y BE AT z ] ] ], Type II (State-②) [ x CAUSE [ BECOME [ y BE AT z ] ] ], Type III (Motion) [ x CAUSE [ y MOVE z ] ], Type III (State) [ x CAUSE [ BECOME [ y BE AT z ] ] ], Type IV (Motion-①) [ [ x ACT ON-y ] CAUSE [ y MOVE z ] ], Type IV (Motion-②) [ x CAUSE [ y MOVE z ] ], Type IV (State-①) [ x CAUSE [ BECOME [ y BE AT z ] ] ](y(∃x)), Type IV (State-②) [ x CAUSE [ BECOME [ y BE AT z ] ] ](y(∃x)). These prototypes provide an exclusive account for the meaning and usage as well as the syntactic structure of the "Onomatopoeia+saseru" form in modern Japanese.
