ABSTRACT

Expressions of equivalence are defined as "phrases which compare the property and essence of two (or more) subjects, and express similarities between them". This paper identifies the uniqueness of expressions of equivalence, different to conventional comparative expressions of non-equivalence; and makes clear their four different types, which depend on the predicate used. Unlike non-equivalent comparisons, where stage-level predicates represent relative meaning (nullifying qualities indicated in the predicate), stage-level predicates in expressions of equivalence make the qualities indicated in the predicate effective; and qualitative statements can be made using non-stage-level predicates. Further, there are unique predicates which signify equivalence, and these can only be used to express the equivalence of two subjects (qualities are nullified). The four types of expressions of equivalence are: "X wa Y to nenrei ga onajida(X's age is the same as Y's)"; "X wa Y to onaji toshida(X is of the same age as Y)"; "X wa Y to dounenda(X is the same age as Y)"; and "X wa Y to onajiku wakai(X is as young as Y)". Differences are seen in their potential to express qualities; and in the necessity of using words to express sides.
