ABSTRACT

In the field of Japanese compound verbs, ‘The principle of harmony of the transitivity’ and ‘The principle of the consistency of the subject’ have great influence, but there are still problems that have not been well addressed. This paper explores the formation and its cognitive mechanism by analyzing the ontological metaphors of such verbs. It is argued that in the second verb of compound verbs, the ontological metaphors act on morphological formation, and such compound verbs fit into the basic template of ‘Target Domain + Source Domain ’. Also, the ontological metaphor of the second verb of a ‘V+V’ compound can provide a cognitive mechanism for the combination of verbs of different semantic fields. In the first verb of compound verbs, the ontological metaphors don’t act on morphological formation but on semantic extension. Such compound verbs follow the basic pattern of ‘Source Domain + Source Domain’, and the ontological metaphors of the first verb and the orientational metaphor of the second verb act together to provide a cognitive mechanism for semantic abstraction of a V+V compound.
