ABSTRACT

The respondent 'そうですね(soudesune)' is originally used as a 'agreement' to the former speaker's firing content, but the actual Japanese textbook often begins with 'そうですね' for the question "How is ~", which is not a typical usage of agreement. Yoshimura(吉 村 2000) points out that this phenomenon is a near-missing use of the language's original meaning of 'agreement'. This study analyzed the interaction function of 'そうですね' in the response to the WH question, using two types of communication data, first face-to-face natural conversation and the interview by a sportsman. First, in the natural conversation, when 'そうですね' appears at turn initial position, it was observed that the respondents are affirming the assertions and assumptions implied in the questioner's question, and are beginning to respond. On the other hand, when ' そうですね' appeared at the middle of the turn, it was used as a signal to initiate an appropriate response to the questioner's question. Second, in the interviews of sports players, when we analyze the scene where 'そうですね' appears on the WH question, it is the case that the interviewer has the opinion before the questioner's question, or the question is based on some of the games, it is possible to know that respondents display 'affirmative' first and starts a response. Thus, we can see that 'そうですね' expressing 'affirmation' about an element implied in the question, which becomes clearer when compared to the use of other language forms. In previous studies, it was known that 'そうですね' plays a role as a 'filler', but it can be distinguished from other filler expressions in terms of 'affirmation' and 'initiative'.
