ABSTRACT

This paper clarified the distribution of properties, actual usages, distribution of usage examples, and the direction and mechanism of semantic extension of onomatopoeia expressing "硬さ(katasa) ". Of the 44 words studied, 88.6% express tactile and visual aspects, while also being linked to auditory sensations. The usage of onomatopoeia expressing "硬さ(katasa)" is divided into 5 types, and overall, there are many usages that modify verbs and nouns, and co-occurrence with adjectives and adjective verbs is quite rare. The usage can be categorized into 5 groups based on the frequency of usage examples for each usage, and can be further divided into 7 types ultimately based on the co-occurring forms. Regarding co-occurrence restrictions with "verbs" and "nouns," there are some that are connected so that they can be substituted with synonyms or related words, but there are very few that have almost no restrictions on usage or association. The acceptance range of "硬さ(katasa)" is relatively wide for 3 categories, "food," "body," and "human being". Of the 44 words, 36 words were confirmed to have expanded their meaning to other areas, accounting for 81.8% of the total. Among the 36 words with confirmed semantic extension, 8 were capable of extending into 4 or more domains of meaning, which suggested a relatively broad semantic extension compared to others. Among the 9 expanded semantic domains, there were many extensions to "image" and "psychological state", which together account for 47% of the total. Furthermore, regarding the cognitive basis of extension, metaphor works in extension to 9 areas, but metonymy was only seen in extension to "language," "image," and "psychological state."
