ABSTRACT

A Reconsideration of Predicate Verb Adjectivization and Noun Modification by Degree Adverbs This study aims to elucidate the mechanisms of predicate verb adjectivization and noun modification by degree adverbs in Japanese from the perspective of scale structure. First, predicate verb adjectivization demonstrates that both the inherent scale property of verbs and the scale property introduced by adverbial elements serve as crucial factors in facilitating this process. Second, concerning noun modification by degree adverbs, the study reveals that even nouns that do not inherently possess scale properties can co-occur with degree adverbs when a scale structure is contextually induced, in addition to cases where nouns morphologically or semantically exhibit scale properties. In particular, it highlights how context-dependent scale structures enable the gradable evaluation of nouns and promote their co-occurrence with degree adverbs. By integrating the concept of scale structure, this study proposes a unified mechanism underlying predicate verb adjectivization and noun modification by degree adverbs, thereby offering a novel perspective on the interpretation of Japanese grammar.
