ABSTRACT

This study examined the priorities of phonetic instruction based on the evaluation scores of Japanese native speakers (JPs) and Korean learners (KLs) on the naturalness of the phrase-final intonation of Korean learners of Japanese. The speech data used are comprised of a conversation between a Korean and a Japanese speaker, featuring six types of spoken intonation (昇降調, ゆすり調, 連続的上昇調, 段状上昇調, 平らな引き伸ばし調, 弱伸ばし下降調). Given variations in the evaluation of intonation depending on conversational content and the hierarchical relationship between interlocutors, I established four conversational scenarios. I adjusted them so particles, te-form, nouns, adverbs, and so on could appear in various positions in the experimental sentences. A Mann-Whitney U test showed that the number of items reflecting the absence of significant differences between the KLs and JPs evaluation scores was more than 68.33% in most minor cases, suggesting the evaluative ability of KLs. The JPs evaluated 昇降調 in(こぼし)て as more natural in the friend reasoning scenario than in the boss reasoning scenario. At the same time, the KLs found no significant difference amid the hierarchical relationship of(こぼし)て in any intonation. Sufficient educational effects can be achieved by introducing te-forms pointing to reason and practicing 昇降調 for different utterance situations. It should, therefore, be regarded as a priority aching target. While JPs may be considered more natural than KLs for some ゆすり調, their occurrence is limited to the beginning of a sentence. In the case of a hierarchical relationship, these patterns may be strictly evaluated, and caution should be taken in instruction.
