ABSTRACT

This study explores the recent research trend in Japanese pragmatics and sociolinguistics by analyzing 108 articles published in 18 academic journals in Korea between 2023 and 2024. Firstly, the total number of papers in pragmatics and sociolinguistics is 108, accounting for 13.4% of all research related to the Japanese language. This indicates a steady continuation of relevant research in this area. On the other hand, the collaborative research rate in pragmatics and sociolinguistics is 14.7%. Compared to different fields, contrastive study is more actively conducted, often requiring large-scale surveys, suggesting that collaborative research in this area is expected to become more active. Next, when examining the research themes of pragmatics and sociolinguistics, it can be observed that papers related to discourse analysis have the highest proportion, followed by speech acts and linguistic behavior. These three areas comprise approximately two-thirds of the total research. It is anticipated that future research in pragmatics and sociolinguistics will continue to increase in discourse analysis, speech acts, and linguistic behavior. Additionally, research on honorific expressions, politeness strategies, linguistic landscapes, language acquisition and contact, linguistic consciousness, and language use is being conducted steadily. Notably, an increasing trend toward interdisciplinary research indicates the potential for expansion in pragmatics and sociolinguistics. Research methods in pragmatics and sociolinguistics often rely on audio materials, like recordings of natural conversations and drama scenarios, highlighting discourse analysis and speech acts. In sociolinguistic studies, surveys are frequently used.
