ABSTRACT

This study explored improvements in Japanese dictionaries specifically designed for Korean learners and examined pedagogical considerations for teaching dictionary-search skills in Japanese language education. Two main findings emerged from the research. First, the study assessed the reliability of learners’ self-assessments regarding whether their dictionary searches met their intended goals. The results indicated that over 90% of these judgments were valid, demonstrating that Korean learners generally performed adequate searches that aligned with their purposes and successfully found appropriate dictionary descriptions. Second, the research focused on instances of ‘failure’ and ‘partial achievement,’ in which learners misjudged whether they had fulfilled their search goals. An analysis of these cases identified four underlying factors: two related to the dictionaries themselves—(1) incorrect or inadequate descriptions and (2) a lack of specialized terminology—and two related to learners’ behaviors—(3) interference from prior knowledge and (4) failure to reach the intended objective. These findings suggest a need for instructional methods that encourage learners to verify information using multiple dictionary resources rather than accepting dictionary descriptions uncritically. Additionally, learners should be guided to develop search strategies that consider the contrasts in meaning and usage between Japanese and their native language. Furthermore, the empirical insights gained from this study regarding learners’ search processes are expected to enhance effective guidance and support for vocabulary searches using generative AI, which is becoming increasingly prevalent.
