Reflection of Christian Counselors: Focusing on Client's Premature Termination

ABSTRACT

This study aims at how Christian counselors have become changed while responding to and coping with a situation of premature termination promoting self-reflection, focusing on self-reflection that has been steadily discussed in development processes for counselors. For this purpose, in-depth interview was advanced with 10 advanced counselors who have experienced the situation of premature termination of their clients within recent 6 months. The analysis of data followed the basic procedures of Creswell(2005) and the results are as follows. First, how have Christian counselors gotten changed in response to and coping with the premature termination according to their careers? Novice counselors recognized the premature termination as failed counseling immediately. However,their emotional responses get to research main causes of premature termination of their clients according to building of their careers and become active in cognitive reactions and measures for recognizing life patterns of their clients. Accordingly,reflection of theirselves and their counseling process is realized. Second, how did Christian counselor’s self-reflection get changed through their experiences of premature termination? Advanced counselors took reflectionin-action while processing their given tasks smoothly. Accordingly, it shows, the higher the development level of expertise of counselors, the more self-reflection they take in the course of counseling. Third, what kinds of efforts and preparations are required to prevent the premature termination? To have thorough knowledge of basics of counseling is the key to prevent the premature termination. It makes working alliance firm on the basis of satisfactory structure and reliable rapport.
