ABSTRACT

This study deals with the need and approach for disability family counseling and care community in Christian counseling and approach. It is needed to understand and accept on disability as equal beings whom to love one another not as different beings with deficiency from God’s perspectives. This indicates needs for changes of distorted perceptions on disability in Korean society, and emphasizes that interests and attempts of ministries for disability should not be limited within only a few churches. Rather, it stresses out needs for care for increasing number of disability children and families. Thus, this study has a purpose on suggesting how church communities can be the resources of care and prevention for disability families’ suffering caused by various problems from their birth to adulthood, specifically focusing on the developmental disability. Particularly, it points out the seriousness of social isolation and difficulty of care for grown-up disability, and emphasis on the need of community not isolating disability people among society. And this study claims the care community of associated churches can help disability grown-ups. In this community, the proper roles as pastors and counselors are needed, and church communities understanding disability people and sharing their lives can be healthy communities by them. Followup study has to deal with more specific approaches and programs for the developmental disability grown-up by care communities.
