ABSTRACT

This study aimed to explore the psychological and emotional distress experienced by mothers of adolescents who were victims of school violence, their efforts to resolve these challenges, and the process of change and recovery they underwent. The participants were three mothers whose children had experienced school violence, and in-depth interviews were conducted from July 2024 to February 2025. The interview transcripts were analyzed using Clandinin and Connelly's (2000) three-dimensional narrative inquiry model, focusing on temporality, place, and sociality. The findings revealed that the mothers experienced both direct and indirect trauma while witnessing their children’s suffering, leading to psychological and physical distress. Across the stages of victimization and recovery, they developed meanings such as "finding new meaning amidst pain," "moving toward growth despite challenges," "support resources as pillars of strength," and "a family community of healing and growth." Despite their struggles, the mothers achieved self-reflection and shifts in perception, growing as both "primary victims" and "agents of recovery." The study emphasizes the need for multifaceted approaches to support mothers’ recovery, integrated support systems for families affected by school violence, and faith-based counseling and recovery programs.
