ABSTRACT

This qualitative case study explores the spousal bereavement experiences of Christian middle-aged women from a Christian perspective. The purpose of this study is to provide practical insights for the field of Christian counseling by profoundly investigating the processes of spousal loss and subsequent recovery. Furthermore, it seeks to contribute to developing effective measures for Christian care within the church community. For this study, nine Christian middle-aged women who had experienced the loss of a spouse were selected as participants for in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using Creswell’s (2013) qualitative case study methodology. The analysis yielded 86 themes, 25 sub-categories and 7 upper-categories reflecting the meanings of individual loss, adaptation, and faith-based recovery. The seven upper-categories include: 'Parting in misery', 'Uncontrollable emotions', 'A crumbling life', 'Struggling to survive', 'Grateful hands amidst suffering', 'A life moving forward by relying on God', and 'Hope and vision in God.' Based on these findings, the study suggests: first, the necessity of follow-up research based on bereavement types and durations, second, support measures in Christian counseling reflecting a Christian worldview, and third, the activation of bereavement support groups within the church and the need for grief education programs for pastors and congregants.
