ABSTRACT

In times of ‘Homo Hundreds’, the paper compares the different features of elderly support in OECD from the year 2001 to 2011. Given that the aging-related societal problems are very serious in Korea, this paper tries to find possible ways and solutions to the social burden for the elderly support. To provide policy implications for Korea government, the empirical models for the conditions, inputs, outputs of elderly support in the 29 advanced countries are constructed and tested. The results from Tobit Panel Regression on poverty rates and life expectancy for the elderly reveal that the variables, Tax Burden, National Burden, Governmental Expenditure ratio of elderly population rate, all have statistically significant effects on the support. Findings from Cluster Analysis and Tree Analysis indicate that Korea government needs to actively engage in lessening the elderly poverty rates.
