ABSTRACT

The study explores social value assigned for care work in our society through intersubjective experiences of care workers and managers working for a public childcare service called ‘Idolbom service’. The study shares an assumption with social institutionalism which argues that social and political institutions both embody and shape power relationships in a given society and therefore impact on the values and norms of individuals. Based on such assumption, the paper argues that the current working conditions of care-workers in Idolbom service reflect the social values assigned for care work in our society. In addressing the findings, the research conducted in-depth interviews with five care workers and two focused group interviews with seven managers. The findings suggest that there is a great room for improving social values assigned for care work and this is clearly reflected in the experiences of the respondents.
