At the interface between justification, ideals and reality -teaching classical literature at local university

This article was written as a keynote paper in a planning presentation titled “Finding a New Way to Classical Literature as a Major Education of the University.” Although many educators have already suggested new ways to educate classical literature, discussions on this topic are repeated. This means that the problems arising from classical literature education are reasoned beyond the dimension of personal competence. I judged that the cause was the public’s demand for universities and changes in the social structure. In addition, the current situation and direction of classical literature education were viewed from three directions. These are the history of changes in Korea’s education curriculum period, curriculum opened in the Department of Korean Language and Literature, and the career environment of graduates. These are the development of thesis focusing on instructors, curriculum, and students, respectively. First of all, as a result of reviewing the trend of the education curriculum period, professors revealed that each generation has features. Therefore, it was desirable for senior professors to give lectures on basic subjects that expand the foundation of knowledge, and young professors to share education on the modern use of classical literature. Next, the curriculum of the Department of Korean Language and Literature at various universities was reviewed. As a result, it is recommended that basic subjects for knowledge acquisition and subjects for modern use be properly divided, and local universities need to study and lecture on literary works and writers created in the region. Finally, it emphasized the need to open subjects related to the career paths of graduates. This includes lectures on scenario creation and video production using classical literature contents. However, it was also emphasized that lectures on basic subjects should be emphasized in order to enter the education school, which is expected to be established soon. However, it should never be forgotten that the task of producing and accumulating knowledge through research and interpretation should be continuously carried out along with this division of roles. This article began with the character of suggesting the direction of classical literature education, not presenting examples of individual classes. Therefore, instead of suggesting a special plan for classical literature education, we had no choice but to discuss the framework in which classical literature education as a major education could be activated. Nevertheless, the most important secret to the success of classical literature education was the warm human relationships and harmony formed between the educational parties. This is because this is one of the basics necessary for education.

Professional Characteristics and Liberal Arts Character of Classical Literature Education Text: Focusing on Its Status as a University’s Major Education

Traditionally, there has been a general perception that universities are immersed in specialized research that creates new knowledge, and the contents of education established hereby are spread through secondary education. However, as Korean language education itself moved away from academic-centered knowledge education and moved to a communication-centered function center, classical literature education also has had a gradual change from the education content focusing on the existing literature theory and history of literature to education centered on the linguistic attributes of literature. Classical literature has two educational properties. One is a property that is constantly enjoyed and reinterpreted while being handed down over a long time, which has a certain emotional influence even today. This can be conceptualized as a liberal arts character. The other is the fact that it shows the original form of culture as a material that contains the appearance of life at the time. This gave it an academic status of acquiring literacy for classical texts. I attempt to conceptualize this in terms of professional characteristics. Every classical literature text has its own inherent value. However, even if the original text is valuable, it does not immediately acquire educational value. ‘Liberal arts’ refers to creative understanding or knowledge that is embodied through acquiring a certain cultural ideal, and its content changes according to the changing times or the cultural ideology of a nation. As an educational philosophy of classical literature, I emphasize that ‘culture’ has a meaning encompassing history and philosophy. Here, the concept that responds well to culture is considered liberal arts. At this time, in the case of Korea, attention is paid to the concept term of ‘culture’ in the composition of the curriculum. In the case of Japan, the concept term of ‘liberal arts’ is highlighted as important in the composition of the curriculum. Here, I will not make a value-based evaluation of the difference between the two countries. The difference in perception between the two countries is because each has its own historical background and reason. This trend comes to affect the university curriculum in Korea, and even in undergraduate major classes at universities, there has been a situation where we are thinking about new teaching methods. As a result, it shows the characteristics that flow from the existing professional characteristics to the strengthening of liberal arts characteristics.

A study on teaching methods of Korean classical novels as a college major - focusing on writing practice and approaches to key words

This paper agrees with the crisis that college education faces related to Korean classical literature. In order to overcome this crisis, it suggests ways to effectively teach Korean classical novels. First, this paper investigates the current status of the curriculum related to classical novels in the departments of Korean language and Korean language education across the country. The thing that stands out the most is the increase in subjects regarding cultural contents. Accordingly, the author ran a curriculum that suggested students to create new cultural contents by taking sources from Korean classical literature. In the beginning of the curriculum, students analyzed worthy cultural contents in various fields. There are various types of cultural contents such as a web novel, web toon, movie, play, musical, drama, game and advertisement. Out of them, students chose contents based on classical literature, and investigated the features and factors of popularity. After that, they created new stories and character types that content consumers would be interested in. Many of these stories were about independent female characters, explorers and travelers, active communicators, characters who fall in love, and had a happy ending. In the “Reading Korean classical novels through key words” class, students can learn the features of Korean literature and the differences between classical literature and contemporary literature by investigating key words. They can think deeply about the subjects by choosing a key word out of several and figuring out how the keyword is shaped in a novel. By reading several classical novels, students can develop reading skills and get familiar with classical literature. Furthermore, they can develop writing skills by expressing how they can relate lessons from novels to their own lives.

A Study on the Production and Utilization of Pansori Novel Textbooks in classical novel reading class

In the classical novel reading class, which is a major subject of Korean language and literature department and Korean language education department, pansori novels are frequently dealt with. At this time, it is necessary to set the standard of what to select as a reading class textbook among various annotated versions and check the use of textbooks for effective operation of the reading class. These days, annotated versions of classical novels are largely divided into modern translations for general readers and original texts for professional researchers. In the case of the reading class, students begin to read classical novels as general readers at the introduction stage, but ultimately they are aimed at having the ability to decipher original texts as major students. Therefore, it is necessary to utilize modern translations and original texts hierarchically. To do this, first of all, it should be clarified that the essence of the reading of the original text pursued by the reading class is the oral recitation in the community unit, and that the function of oral recitation is in expressing and deepening the emotional response of the audience to classical novels. Next, the class process should be hierarchized so that students who are still unfamiliar with oral recitation can get used to reading aloud by using the familiar silent reading method. At the beginning of the reading class, it is necessary to use the modern translation versions to focus on the contents through the silent reading, but it is necessary to gradually induce the students to experience the rich auditory elements contained in the original text and to increase the utilization of the original text. At the first stage of silent reading, focusing on imagining the emotion and atmosphere of the characters rather than acquiring detailed information is more important so that the result of silent reading can be the basis for coordinating the voice according to the emotional meaning of the scenes in the next stage of oral reading. Finally, the purpose of each step should be reflected in the production of textbooks. The modern translation versions that will be used in the silent reading stage should be able to stimulate the reader’s imagination and emotional responses by containing various image materials and presenting appropriate additional information in the quotations of poems. Based on this, it is necessary for students to reflect on their reading and to activate mutual criticism by making the textbook in the form of an audio file to be used in the oral reading stage of original texts.

A Study on the Role and Potential of Oral Literature Classes as a University Major Education

This paper reviews the current issues of the oral Literature course, based on the Korean Oral Literature course at Ewha Womans University, and proposes plans with cases in order to raise the possibilities and objectives of Korean oral Literature as a university major. The 15-week Korean oral Literature course covers various genres such as folk narratives, Shaman’s songs(muga), folk songs, pansori, and folk plays. Because the regions, histories and genres of works are diverse, works and topics are selected according to the professor’s teaching goal. In terms of students, in addition to Korean Literature majors, students from other departments with interests in classics, contents, and oral language, and as the proportion of foreign students increases in the university, foreign students are also increasing in the Korean Oral Literature course. Even if the aspects of utilization are highlighted in the curriculum due to the change in the university, the study of Korean traditional literature should aim for the social values that we dream of. Since the research on Oral literature started as research on folk/minority literature, we should consider its basic nature while considering the collective wisdom and symbolic value creation of the community. In addition, we must consider the locality and reality as a genre that is still alive. In the class, students were encouraged to pre-learn videos and materials before the class, and each genre was arranged with group presentations and discussions to dynamically construct the class. In the situation where foreign students are increasing, comparative literary perspectives were used to lead their participation and review the universality and specificity of Korean oral literature, and cultural perspectives were used to interpret Korean oral literature in different eras and cultural regions. This not only deepens our understanding of Korean oral literature, but also moves towards deepening our understanding of humans and society by analyzing current social and cultural phenomena from the perspective of Korean oral literature, challenging familiar situations and values. Thus, Korean oral classes that focus on our daily lives and stories should expand their academic role even in the midst of university change.

East Asian Discourse and Korean Literature in Classical Chinese character

To define East Asia’s cultural identity as several specific cultural factors is to recognize East Asian culture as objects of ideas, ideals, imagination, and fiction, not as entities that exist. However, it is not right to deny the existence of East Asian universal culture and common culture because of the fact that East Asian culture cannot be explained by several specific factors. It can never be right to deny even the facts that exist not to see East Asia based on ideas and ideals. Literature in classical chinese character, one of the cultural elements of East Asia, is a literary style that began in China and spread throughout East Asia. Therefore, in order to approach East Asian literature in classical chinese character, a balanced perspective between the self and the other is necessary. This is the same in the case of Korean literature in classical chinese character, and accordingly, it is argued that East Asian literature in classical chinese character and Korean literature in classical chinese character should be viewed from a relative perspective, but the practical approach has not yet met this discourse. Researchers of Korean literature in classical chinese character believe that Korean literature in classical chinese character is a literature that emphasizes subjectivity while aiming for chineseization, and that it is a literature that has heterogeneity based on homogeneity with literature in classical chinese character in China and homogeneity based on heterogeneity with literature in classical chinese character in other regions, and aims to establish the status of Korean literature in classical chinese character in East Asia by revealing the contents of exchanges and communication through various contacts. However, these arguments still have many problems to be solved in that most of the leaders of mutual exchange and communication in East Asia do not have a decisive influence in the country’s politics, society, and culture, and the results of exchange and communication have generally resulted in a personal level. Therefore, in order to solve the problem of the status of Korean Literature in Classical Chinese Character in East Asia, it is necessary to reconsider the most essential part of East Asia and Korean Literature in Classical Chinese Character from now on.
