ABSTRACT

This research is to study Myunggo Seo Hyung Soo’s Poem literature (徐瀅修, 1749〜1824). Myunggo is evaluated as a scholar who had the academic attitude toward historical truth and the practical literay point of view, putting emphasis on self apprehension(自得) and individuality. This research looks into the characteristics in his poem literature, focusing on Myunggo’s epistemic feature. We can characterize Myunggo’s epistemic feature into following 3 aspects. The first aspect is his meditative attitude on Myunggo area(明臯). He exposes the sincerity and the meditative attitude on life in poem for Myunggo area(明臯), describing its beautiful senary. The second aspect is his emotion of self-respect and self-grieve, He shows his self-respect on becoming a writer and classical scholar who does not try for practical interests. On the same time he shows self-grieve in facing against the difficult situation in the real life. The third aspect is his way of thoughts penetrating Confucianism and Buddhism. He suffered from the political frustration, stepped back from governmental post, but fostered and self-examined himself, accepting Buddhism. We can find that he fostered his body by Confucianism and he controled his mind by Buddhism in his several poems. In his poem, he shows his sincere emotion in facing against the difficult situation in the real life and finely presents poetic situation and contents by putting self-annotation. These aspects prove that he belonged to Soron who accepted the various ideas, and his academical tradition in some points was related to his family(from Dalseung Seo) studies which tried for eruditeness.
