A Study on the TV Drama Jumong

ABSTRACT

MBC TV drama Jumong is the historical drama that makes subject on the Jumong myth and it hit the air 81th editing from May 15, 2006 to March 6, 2007. Jumong was based on the myth of national foundation hero in the myth time that was admitted the logic behind myth of focused holiness. So, it used various methods to realize on the logic behind myth. The first, it makes a hero to a normal person and changed the myth of national foundation hero to growth story on a mediocrity. In ordered to this drama, Jumong was not gifted hero any more. He was an ordinary person in childhood, but he educated to his father, Haemosu and succeed to father's destiny about the great work of founding the Nation. Father's great work changed Jumong's character as an ordinary person to a hero and it leads to identify Jumong with the TV audience oneself. The second, Jumong's image as a hero are made by various visual method, it included cloths, hair styles, and camera workings and so on. Especially, the scene of shooting an arrow is very activity by camera working, and it makes Jumong to holy bowman. The TV audience who watch this scene, believed Jumong as a national foundation hero. Also, Jumong's hair styles are changed by his character, and express his complicated mind. The description of Jumong uses some motives of modern TV drama(for example, secret of birth, love triangle, and strong woman character and so on) together with a historical drama story. The mixing on some motives of modern TV drama makes feel friendly towards the TV audience. And especially, strong woman character is the one of distinguishing mark of Jumong. In these women, Soseono was a representative woman, and she was configurated as a brave woman, as a heroin in Jumong.
