ABSTRACT

This article studies how Sinpa is related to liberalism. Modern ideas and social orders are based on liberalism and liberalist institutions. Sinpa, as a Modern mode of representation, takes this liberalist world for a major object. But the sentimentalism originated in family always perfoms a significant role in the course of representing the world, in doing so Sinpa produces a misrecognition for the world. Family justifies any act in the competitive social order and gives moral value and authenticity to it. Besides, the irrational sentimentalism of Shinpa make the value and authenticity very strong. Sinpa has maintained a ruling position as a mode of representation throughout the 20th century in Korea. After the year 1987, the advent of political liberalization weakened Sinpa and intimidated its position. Sinpa couldn't be dominant any longer and began to be deconstructed. <Biyulhan Guri(Mean Street)> and <Hayan Gatap(White Tower)> show a symptom of this deconstruction. Those Male Shinpas weaken the sentimentalism in family, therefore the family cannot be endowed with a moral prestige. As a result of that, liberalistic competitive social order which had been concealed or distorted in Sinpa began to be represented directly. The deconstructed Sinpa in the age of New Liberalism, disclosed the fundamental relation between Sinpa and liberalism and how Sinpa has produced misconception and concealment of liberalism ideology.
